Ten on Ten February February 10, 2011

I have long admired the Ten on Ten project started by Rebekah of a bit of sunshine. The concept? “Take a photo every hour for ten consecutive hours on the tenth of each month. Document a day of your life and find beauty among the ordinary moments.” I’ve always that since most often the tenth falls on a work day I wouldn’t have much to share. But, I decided to give it a try anyway, and it actually changed my perspective on the day. It was fun to set a reminder throughout the day to take a look around and find pretty non-office-related things. Enjoy!

Stay tuned for more installments in this project – I really enjoyed it! Head over to a bit of sunshine to see the rest of today’s ten on ten.

Christmas from coast to coast January 6, 2011

Since we took the holidays off from blogland (mostly), and D has shared her experiences from the North Pole, I’m going to take a day to savor and share with you Christmas here in Washington.

Out the window Christmas Morning

My family celebrates both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, bookended with cozy family meals on both ends. In between, we open gifts, watch movies, play games, and enjoy the scenery. A festive time for sure.

This year for Christmas Eve feasting we wanted to keep things simple: tomato soup and grilled cheese, done up fancy for the holiday. I made this panini and it was delicious, although I was too liberal with the artichoke spread, I’d suggest keeping it light.  Also, i swapped out radicchio for arugula, and that was just fine. I also made a brussels sprouts salad as a side, with apple and a lemon vinagrette.

For Christmas morning breakfast, my mom whipped up a smoked salmon, dungeness crab, and dill frittata, similar to this recipe. DEEEEELISH!

Simple satisfying frittata

Every year my aunt decorates the house with a theme of decorations. Since she and my grandmother live on a beach, this year’s theme was undersea with holiday sparkle. From glittered clam shells, to felt fishies, to ribbon jellyfish, the decorations were amazing, beautiful, and cohesive. The house was a-glitter with turquoise, copper, and white.

Hand sewn and beaded felt fish

Coppery Jellyfish

Seahorse

Seascape mantle

Glassy tablescape

So many wonderful detals!

And to make it even more impressive, she hand-made all the the ornaments! To fill out the scheme, she found a wicker clamshell at the thrift store, spray painted copper, and added a pearl for extra whimsy!

Underwater holidays

We finished the holiday by meeting up with the rest of the family, and I’m sad I didn’t get any good pictures of Christmas Day itself 😦 You’ll have to imagine the festivities!

Peace on Christmas morning

Hope all had a very wonderful holiday and a happy happy new year. Any fun holiday 2010 stories to share?

If you want a trip down memory lane, photos of Christmas 2009 here and here.

Big News!

the Ravenna Girls have been accepted to our very first craft show. While it might seem like one more thing to add to a crazy holiday schedule, we found a local neighborhood show that should be the perfect place for us to get started with non-online sales.

The craziest part is that it is coming up in just a couple weeks, so we’ve been working to beef up our inventory and with that comes crafting and with THAT comes an early influx of festive music. I’m fully feeling the festive Christmas spirit early this year and already there is so much eye candy around the web to get your mind started. One of my faves so far is the new digital issue of Sweet Paul Magazine. I’ve clipped my highlights to get your Christmas heart a-fluttering!

Bright and cheery wrappings

These wrappings would be gifts in themselves!

Awesome idea for repurposing sweaters

Light and modern ideas for a holiday brunch

Head over to Sweet Paul to check out more holiday delights. Light a fire, turn on your holiday tunes, and get into the season!

Also, if you live in the Seattle area mark your calendars for the Ravenna Holiday Craft Show.

Its been about a month since we took an afternoon to kick-off a bachelorette party with a lazy sunny canoe, and to be honest i had sort of forgotten i took these photos. But now that the sun is out most days i am reminded of this early kick-start to summer. Look at those clouds!

I know i need to get all these things posted to an online album sooner or later, but work and travel and the house have been so crazy lately it just seems to sink to the bottom of the priority list. Probably doesn’t help that we share memory cards sometimes so the pics are always floating around between 2 cameras, lol.

quite literally in fact.

I know, we’ve been neglectful bloggers as of late.  I’d usually apologize, but eh, I just didn’t feel like blogging.  That’s really all.  Plus, June began our crazy busy month of pure fun.  Seriously, sometimes my calendar makes me hyperventilate.  But I have such fun doing it all!!

What’d we miss?

For a whole week my lil sister came out to Seattle to visit me.  It was delightful, except for the whole rain thing.  It wasn’t just a little rain.  It was a whole lotta rain. Cold and rainy.  She probably thinks this place is tragic since her plane landing in town has always issued the start of some unusual pattern of intense grossness lasting for days.  While I was irritated that the camping trip I planned on the peninsula was literally washed away… I was also doing a happy dance for the grass seed B and I planted in the backyard.  It’s like three inches tall after 2 weeks of rain.

Anyway, I digress.  We found rainy day activities to do.  It involved Kaity making us homemade pancakes on Saturday morning in our PJs .  And then the three of us bundled under blankets on the couch ate and watched TV.  Pure bliss.

Plus, we played hooky from work (shhh!) and finally visited Banya 5.  It’s this great Russian bathhouse in South Lake Union with steam rooms, sauna, a tea room and different temperature pools.  Plus if you arrive before 4.30 it is half off admission.  It was delightful…living in Finland thought B and I how to love sauna.

We ventured out in the rain one day and took the ferry over to the Kitsap Peninsula.  We visited both Port Gamble and Poulsbo… walking around, drinking coffee, shopping.  The sun peeked out a few times… but sadly not on the ferry home….

Kaity and I dined at two of my favorite Seattle restuarants.  Don’t you love when people come to visit and it gives you the perfect excuse to go to your favorite spots??  We had sandwiches at Macrina bakery and sushi at Chiso, yumyum!

Oh, and we played lots of board games in between all of this…and had friends over to join the fun.

And then, on Memorial Day… it was looking like rain.  So we thought…all well, we will just have an indoor BBQ.  About an hour before people were going to come over… there came the sun, in full force.  We all quick moved the patio furniture out and started the grill… It was glorious.  Also glorious were the made from scratch Red Velvet cupycakes Kaity made for me (which i so nicely shared with my friends…)  Why on earth did I not take a picture of these??  Oh, probably because I was too busy eating them and basking in the sun on the patio.

The sun was nice enough to last for Kaity’s last day in town too… So we went to Ballard Locks and watched the salmon swim and the boats go through …

danielley says, “watching these salmon  makes me hungry for dinner!”

: )

a little weekend recap February 2, 2010

Yes, I know it’s Tuesday.

But, really, Monday is for mourning the weekend’s passing.

Tuesday is for celebrating it.

(or, on Monday, we are too busy to post about our weekend.  choose as you please. )

Well, regardless, it was FUN.  Like crazy fun.  here is the recap, and the links to go along with it!

🙂

We started out Saturday  by venuring to the Northwest Film Forum for their Children’s Film Festival.  You see, it was the North America premiere of “Moomin and the Midsummer Madness” on the big screen.

If you know me, you know how much I love and adore Moomin.  Oh, and Snork Maiden with her yellow hair poof.  I, of course, wore my Moomin t-shirt, which I got at the Moomin Museum in Tampere, Finland.  {take that kids!}

The full length movie was awesome.  The best part– after the Moomin family had been forced to retreat to the second floor of their home due to the first floor flooding, Moomintroll swam through the first floor to retrieve the coffee beans that were left there.  Meanwhile, upstairs, Moominpappa was busy chopping a chair “that no one liked anyways” into kindling for the fire he was building on the middle of the floor.  No, the fire was not for warmth… It was to boil water for their coffee!  How Finnish!

Then, were jaunted over to the home of a friend who is getting married this year to help with wedding related crafts.  🙂  I’m sure you will see some of that when we are done…

Sunday… we tried a new-to-us brunch place over in Ballard ….

{The Leary Traveler had a built-your-own bloody mary bar.  ‘Nough said.}

…and watched the first Rat City Rollergirls bouts of the season.  The SOCKiT Wenches, our fav derby team won!  I mean, how can you go wrong with team members like Swede Hart, Caddie Smack, Anya Heels, and {my personal favorite} Sarah Impalin???

AH, fun times.  Is it Saturday yet?
