Birthday Festivus December 14, 2010

Today was darling D’s birthday! To celebrate the official day, we scampered from work a few minutes early to hit up happy hour at a new(ish) New Orleans restaurant, Toulouse Petit. It was DELISH. Dungeness crab atop Fried Green Tomatoes is all I have to say. We have some photos of our meal that we’ll share in a few days time. Then, we made a brief stop at her office’s champagne and dessert party, then home to get cozy and continue the celebration.

Festive birthday socks!

If you know D, though, you know the celebration of a birthday during the Christmas season can’t just be limited to a couple festive cocktails. Oh no. So, two weekends ago we took a trip on the Northwest Railway Museum’s SANTA TRAIN. The deal is that you depart North Bend, take a 20 min ride up to their restored vintage train depot in Snoqualmie, hang out with Santa and some cocoa, then trek back to Snoqualmie. The train is all dolled up, and Mr. Bells the festive 90 year old caroller keeps you jingling all the way!

It was very fun, and our “Christmas Captain” enjoyed it very much.

We went to Boat Street Cafe … we have been wanting to go there for a long time.  We seem to always have been side tracked though… but tonight there was no excuse.

It was the Birthday B’s special day…. and what says “Birthday B” more then a French bistro??

Seriously everything is better with sugar and yummy.

B got me these (appropriately named Message in a Cookie)  from Williams Sonoma.  I love them!  {Rumor has it they are back ordered, sadly, but hopefully not  forever!}

I tried them out a few weeks ago for a birthday at work… because happy birthday is better personalized….

One of our thoughtful birthday guests was happy to share with us at the party that the 18th of August {the birthday b’s actual birthday} is also national cupcake day.

For the festivus this year we had:

Tequila Nectarine Cakes

(yes yum!)

1 box of yellow cake mix and its ingredients

two large ripe nectarines

1 cup powdered sugar

the juice of one lime

the zest of one lime

1-2 shots of tequila

 

First, cut your nectarines into small pieces.  Tiny pieces.  Put them in a bowl with the lime juice, zest and tequila.  Stir and cover.  Refridgerate for 2 hours.

After that, prepare the cake batter as the instructions on the box call for. 

In cupcake dishes lined with pink parchment cups, put one spoonful of the batter in each one.  Then put one spoonful of the nectarine mixture in the cup.  (some fruit and some of the tequila too!)  Finally place two more spoonfuls of batter in each of the cups.  Now bake according  to the time and temperature on the box.

After they are done, let them cool completely.  While cooling, take the remainder of the nectarine mixture and mix it with powdered sugar until it desolves and is a thick glaze.  Add a little more lime juice  if it is too thick. 

After completely cooled, spoon on the glaze, making sure a few nectarine pieces remain on top of eat cake.

remember when you were little and it was still cool to take donut holes (munchkins for those of you on the east coast…) to school on your birthday?

so for one of the birthday b’s many celebratory treats, we whipped up a new cookie for her to take to work with her.  there is nothing like passing around some cookies in birthday cheer with your crown!

lavender citrus shortbreads

from The Cookie and Biscuit Bible with a few adaptations of my own

Cookies

1/2 cup unsalted butter at room temperature

1/4 cup superfine sugar

1/ 1/2 cups all purpose flour

1 tbsp dried lavender

 

Icing

1 cup powdered sugar

2 tbsp lemon juice ( or a combination of orange and lemon)

zest of 1 lemon and an orange

 

Preheat to 300 degrees.

In a bowl, stir the flour and lavender together.

In a separate bowl,  cream the butter and sugar together until fluffy and light in color with an electric mixer.  Add the flour and lavender mixture and mix until batter is just incorporated. Mixture will be very dry so don’t worry. Using your lil fingers, form the batter into a soft ball shape and leave in bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for about 15 minutes. Press dough into prepared square pan. Once dough is pressed into pan, bake for 10 minutes.  Take out of the oven and with a VERY sharp knife cut even squares with a pastry scraper and poke holes in each with the tines of a fork.

Then — Bake for 30 min or until sides of shortbread turn golden. Let cool in pan 10 minutes and remove cookies carefully setting them on a wire rack to cool completely.

When cookies are completely cool, combine the powdered sugar, citrus juice and zest in a small bowl and mix until well incorporated. Drizzle the icing on the cookies with a spoon. Let dry for 2 hours/overnight.
